This book is an Indian classic. It’s the best that one can get on the real social
conditions of a village people living near border at Indian side during the partition
of 1947 from Pakistan. First published in 1956 by prominent Indian author
Khushwant Singh, Train to Pakistan is a 180 odd pages miracle of fictional writing.
Mano Majra is a small village at the Indian side with Sikhs, Hindu & Muslim
population living peacefully. They don’t have much to deal with partition thing. But
during the same time a land-lord is murdered. Main suspect is a notorious village
gangster Juggut Singh who is in love with a Muslim girl. Tension arises when a
train carrying dead bodies arrives in the village from Pakistan. It’s left to Juggut
Singh to deal with this whole scene. It’s his last chance to get redemption.
